What drives my enthusiasm for History and Politics is their irrevocable impact on current society. Growing up, I enjoyed visiting museums in London, New York and Rome as this made History seem more real and tangible for me. I then entered the political atmosphere by becoming an active member of the pressure group 'Every Disabled Child Matters', which has encouraged me to think independently. I have read books around the Politics syllabus, such as 'On Liberty' by JS Mill and 'Politics and Governance in the UK' by Michael Moran. My zeal for History and Politics developed as I involved myself in many courses and lectures; my favourite one being by the speaker Richard J Evans called 'Hitler and the Origins of War'. These have helped stimulate my curiosity in these two domains that I believe are very much intertwined, relevant and alive today.
Studying History at A-Level increased my interest for the subject, leading me to read Ian Kershaw's 'The Nazi Dictatorship' and 'The Anatomy of Fascism' by Robert Paxton. I then became intrigued by the power and primacy of individuals such as Mussolini and Hitler. This motivated me to explore the impact of such regimes on an individual's daily life and I began to visit an elderly European refugee fortnightly. Following a visit to Poland, I was able to weigh the evidence and make more personal judgements on the effects of Fascism and war on current society and then debate my views with other members of the History Society. I was also selected to represent the school on a course entitled 'Life without Conflict in 21st Century Britain' where we analysed the progression of our modern age and the origins of some fundamental initiatives such as the NHS.
My passion for politics extends beyond the classroom and I do regular voluntary work for my local MP including research, election preparation, and campaigning. I enjoy this as it immerses me in the mechanics of the British political system and lets me see behind the scenes. During the recent London Mayoral election I was involved in questioning voters' methods and campaigning for a candidate. This allowed me to critically analyse the electoral system and experience party and door-step politics. I have also undertaken work experience at the law firm Mishcon de Reya where I observed office politics and learnt the importance of organisation and enquiry when working on a project. My membership of the British Youth Council lets me debate political ideas as well as question and examine the British system with experts.
Involvement within my school community gave me many rewarding opportunities. I was both a Team Leader and Super Buddy, enabling me to sit on the Student Council and improve my leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills. Other responsibilities I have held include being a Homework Club Officer, Activity Officer, Maths Monitor and member of the Debating Society, enhancing my ability to structure, evaluate and articulate arguments. All these roles have helped me to become more efficient in managing my time and coping under pressure.
In my leisure time, aside from playing the cello, I am a keen sports enthusiast. I have captained and played in many sports tournaments which I then used to complete my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. I competed in the London Youth Games, represented England in the Maccabi Games and received many sports prizes at my school. I also enjoy reading and participated in the Carnegie Reading Group, in which I selected, analysed and delved into texts with other students and teachers.
All my extra-curricular activities have helped me gain the practical skills, dedication and focus needed to study History and Politics and made me recognise that they are not just academic subjects, but do have a substantial impact on the world that I wish to learn more about. A joint honours degree will provide an exciting and stimulating environment in which I will be able to further my intellectual curiosity.
